Our Heritage
Honouring the Past, Supporting the Future
Since its founding in 1917, the Rocklea Showgrounds has stood as a proud symbol of community spirit, local resilience, and agricultural heritage. Established by the Rocklea Agricultural and Industrial Association Inc.—known today as the Rocklea Show Society—the grounds were built by volunteers, and remain volunteer-run to this day. Their commitment ensures that this important part of Brisbane’s history continues to serve the community well into the future.
A Legacy Rooted in the Land
The current site was once part of the William Henry Pegg Dairy, nestled in a region known for its strong cattle and farming industries. In its early years, the Rocklea Show quickly earned a reputation as one of Brisbane’s best, drawing crowds who came to celebrate the achievements of local growers, makers, and livestock breeders.
During World War II, the showgrounds took on a different role—serving as a base for Australian and American Armed Forces. Social dances were held on site to farewell soldiers, and funds were raised to send comfort packs to those serving overseas. It was a time that reinforced the showgrounds' role as both a place of gathering and a symbol of community care.
Generations of Dedication
The Rocklea Show Society has long been supported by multi-generational volunteers, with many committee members today following in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents—some of whom first became involved in the 1940s and 50s. This deep connection to place and purpose is what keeps the spirit of the showgrounds alive.
Preserving History, Serving Today
While the local landscape has transformed since the early farming days, our mission remains the same:
To provide a space that celebrates community, supports local initiatives, and honours the agricultural roots of Rocklea.
Whether hosting modern events or reflecting on our past, the Rocklea Showgrounds continues to grow as a living legacy of Brisbane’s south.
